New Pocket Life iPhone Version 2.0

February 16th, 2010

Our newest iPhone version makes location-based social networking more interactive and now includes geo-tagged photos as well as simple ways to store and share favourite places.

The new iPhone version of Pocket Life is out on the shelves of Apple’s iTunes App Stores worldwide. Adding to its existing features to interact and view friends’ real time location on interactive maps the new version now allows to upload and share geo-tagged photos with friends and view them on maps right away.

Other improvements include: favourite places can easily be stored and shared with connected friends and social communication features have been improved. Users can now share their thoughts using a quick status update button and choose from pre-set emoticons to express their mood.

The new iPhone version of Pocket Life is available as a full paid version and a free “lite” version. The lite version has all of the functionality, but limits the number of connected friends you can see on a map.

This iPhone version is the starting point of a ambitious roadmap for 2010. We will roll out Pocket Life across numerous more languages, add fun social features, even more interactivity on the iPhone and support for Google Android.

The low down on location and privacy – green and grey

Some people are concerned by the concept that a service might broadcast their current location, one of the last bastions of privacy, out onto the Internet. That is why we have tackled security and privacy as being of utmost importance with Pocket Life.

With Pocket Life sharing your location is completely ‘opt in’, this means you have to specifically turn visibility on and you have full control over who you share your location with.

One of the main features we have included is a fine grained control over sharing based on assigning your contacts to groups. Once a contact is assigned to a group you set what is shared with that group, so you can still be connected to your boss without sharing location while safely sharing your pinpoint location to your friends of the new bar you are at.

From your mobile we use GPS to send your location, this means that your phone has to be on with Pocket Life running to update your current position. From here we make it really easy to turn your location updating on or off by simply pressing and holding the * key (or via the ‘options’ menu). When your location is turned to off (i.e. grey icon) no one can locate you.

You can also choose to set your location manually and leave it set to whatever location you choose. If you don’t have a GPS built into your phone you can still set your location, however you need to set your location manually every time.

What this all means is you don’t have to worry about sharing your location automatically by signing up to Pocket Life. You can also use the service without sharing your location at all and still use all the great features to find things around you.

Here in the lab we love the location sharing features and especially some of the really cool stuff like watching your close friends move on the map in real time all from your handset, try it out.
